Racism in common culture

I just witnessed a child getting excited and pointing something out to their young friend. After a few moments I realized it was a y shaped fire hose connector, comminly referee to as a Siamese connector. Which was clearly labelled above the pipe. The child’s excitement was over the name, as she is clearly Siamese.

For the first time the basis of this name struck me. That over a century ago a pair of conjoined twins from Siam were the world traveling freak show of a generation. Coining the phrase Siamese twins, still commonly used today and now the word Siamese isn’t used to discribe a nationality, but to refer to an oddly shaped water pipe as if all people from Siam were disfigured.

Something to think about.
